1775. The Biggest Ever BitTorrent Leak: MediaDefender Internal Emails Go Public

When TorrentFreak reported that Media Defender (MD) was behind the video site MiiVi, they cast doubt on us. Now, in what is surely the biggest BitTorrent leak ever, nearly 700mb of MD’s emails have gone public. When MD’s Randy Saaf found out we rumbled MiiVi he said, “This is really fucked.” This is too, but much more so.

2392. Zonbu Notebook for sale in 2008

Zonbu, the company that brought you the uber cheap desktop that had a monthly subscription fee attached to it is now bringing you a notebook with the same deal. The biggest difference is you get a whole notebook instead of a dummy terminal with everything being based online. Although you do still get all the online services, the custom OS, and the cheap price at the cost of a monthly subscription fee, you also get a fully fledged laptop. Its an Everex featuring a VIA C7-M 1.5GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a 60GB HDD, DVD-ROM, 128MB VIA Chrome9 graphics, and WiFi in b/g flavors. Not bad for $279 and $15 a month. I have yet to look at the contract terms, but I am sure there is something in there to keep you from buying the laptop and a month of service for under $300 and then ditching the service and installing your own OS. It is a good deal though for those who can’t be bothered to mess with things like off-site backups, virus software, and firewalls, this service would pretty much take care of all of that for you as well as connect you to a good amount of online storage allowing you remote access to your files and the ability to share them with friends and family. 2171. MTV Takes on P2P by Making South Park Free

thefickler writes "MTV Networks, the biggest division of Viacom Inc. has announced plans to make every South Park episode available online for free as part of a plan to make the show available to a larger audience." This is apparently largely because of the success of a similar project where they put every episode of The Daily Show on-line a few months back. This action didn't hurt ratings, and it may have actually helped them.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

2354. CE-Oh no he didn't! Part LII: AT&T CEO scoffs at Verizon's "Any Apps, Any Device" plan

Filed under: Even 6 months ago, it would have been inconceivable to imagine the CEO of the biggest cellphone operator in the US sniping at its primary competitor's hints at becoming more open. The key point being that none of the cellphone operators in the US are actually "open" by any objective definition, so maybe AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson should have bitten his tongue rather than stating that his company is "probably one of the most open networks in the world," in a mild rebuke to Verizon's open network plan for 2008. Also Randall, stating that "all of the handsets we sell are Java-equipped" might be a little unwise considering that AT&T's flagship handset, and probably the most widely publicized handset (ever?) is clearly not. At least the debate is moving forward: hopefully his statement that "[all carriers] are all going to be open over time" will come to fruition with a little more gentle prodding coupled with the occasional kick up the arse.

2378. Xbox 360 Fall Dashboard Update due next week, Microsoft tells all

Filed under:
We've been hearing quite a bit about next week's Fall Dashboard Update for the 360, but Microsoft's finally ready to spill all of the beans. Obviously, the biggest update is the "Xbox Originals" downloadable Xbox games, but other improvements include enhanced online profiles, increased social networking, beefed up parental controls, improved menus, and our personal favorite: DivX support. As stated before, Xbox Original games, like Halo 1 and Fable, will be going for 1200 MS points (about $15), which is roughly comparable with your local game store's bargain bin. Also on the fiscal side of things, certain titles on Xbox Live Arcade are getting permanent price drops, akin to "Platinum Hits" of retail titles. As for DivX, Microsoft was a little vague when speaking with Joystiq about it, but it sounds like XviD is in play as well, which is just double fun. It's all hitting as a free download on December 4th, starting at 2AM PST.

2404. Google Leaks Info On Future of Online Apps

A Google executive recently let out previously unknown information about upcoming changes to the company's Google Apps suite of productivity and communication tools. The biggest news is that online apps will be capable of GOING OFFLINE as desktop apps. When they're moved back "online," changes are folded into the normal online "versions" system. 2409. Forget Hackers -- IT Staff Biggest Source of Leaks

A survey by security services provider Orthus conducted in the UK and Europe found that "TRUSTED USERS" were the biggest sources of information leaks, users such as: "IT personnel (30%), customer service staff (22%), third parties (16%), sales staff (12%) and the operations department (10%)."

2434. Nokia “Comes with Music” music subscription service ends well

Nokia has been making a lot of noise in these shark-infested mobile waters lately, must mean their CEO isn’t ready to step down yet (lol). Their latest is their “Comes with Music” initiative. Basically its an all you can eat music service for your phone with a year long contract deal type of thing, so it’s a lot like the Zune Pass. The two biggest differences are that Nokia currently only has Universal signed up for the deal, oh yeah, and the best part, at the end of the subscription term, you get to keep the music. Nokia apparently has some big plans for the service as they’ve been quoted saying “Even if you listened to music 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you would still only scratch the surface of the music that we’re making available.” So that’s great, but we have no details on when it will be available, or how much it will add to the cost of the handset. Something like this would definitely make me reconsider my next phone purchase. Nokia “Comes with Music”: subscription plan with a happy ending [via jkontherun] Relevant Entries on SlashGear

2443. Xbox 360 Fall 2007 Dashboard Update Goes Live

So it went live today, I just downloaded it myself, the biggest feature, the ability to download Xbox Originals, or full games from the original Xbox. If you plan on making a habit out of it, I’d recommend upgrading to the 120GB Xbox HDD first, Fable was one of the first 7 titles available, and it was 3.3GB I believe, so it’ll eat up the 20 gig hard drive quick. On top of that there is the XBLA Hits program which is a lot like the Greatest Hits game program, where the best games, after a certain period of time, get labeled Hits or Greatest Hits and get a drop in price, same thing, but for XBLA. The rumored news feeds are also present and they show things like new games and updates to the Xbox Marketplace. The extended bio for your Xbox Live profile is also there as well as the ability to see the friends list of your friends, kind of like social networking. The family timer settings are there as well as the full screen movie previews and the special buttons for the dashboard to take you directly to XBLA or the Video Marketplace. So, all is good, go get the update, and enjoy, oh, and in case you were wondering, Halo is in the list of downloadable games too, just the original one for now though. 2697. Shocker: people loathe cellphone carriers

Filed under:
We know, we know, it may be difficult to understand how companies that lock you in the moment you decide on a phone / plan -- only to be about as helpful as a bottomless bucket the moment turmoil arises -- could be hated. Nevertheless, we can't say we're shocked at all to hear that cellphone providers are among the least liked in all of the service industries. In a recent report released by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, it was found that "fewer than half of respondents were completely or very satisfied with their cellphone service," and sadly, that's hardly different than in years past. Among the biggest gripes were high prices and mandatory contract extensions, and while pro-rated ETFs are fine and dandy, there's still a few less notable carriers that haven't swallowed that pill just yet. As for internal rankings, Verizon and Alltel each scored higher than the rest, and Sprint was found bringing up the rear.

2889. The Garmin Colorado 400 BlueChart GPS unit

Well that didn't take long. The Garmin "Colorado" rumor we mentioned yesterday appears to be closer to a reality today. According to reports, the new device will be actually be called the Colorado 400 Bluechart GPS, and will sport a slew of new features, the biggest of which is the ability to display aerial photos and / or USGS topographical maps. Additionally, the new device (aimed at the marine market) will feature detailed, coastal US marine charts, a new "Rock 'N' Roller" input wheel, a 65,000 color 240 x 400 display, an SD card slot, 2-axis compass, an altimeter, temperature sensor, plus ANT Communications (wireless exchange of routes, tracks, waypoints, and geocaches between two units). No official word on whether this is actually available, but supposedly you can order it right now for $599.99.
