1766. Blu-Ray? HD-DVD? China Adds a Third Format
Not content with poisoning our toothpaste, dog food and toys, China now poisons the debate over which high-def disc format will prevail. While Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats slug it out for primacy, and consumers scream for the industry to make up its mind, China announces a THIRD INCOMPATIBLE STANDARD. The official-sounding Foundation of China High Definition DVD Industry Association approved the China High Definition DVD (CH-DVD) format, which was "developed" by Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center (CH-DVD is basically a counterfeit version of Toshiba's HD-DVD, with some proprietary code added).
1854. Ameritrade Security Audit Finds Privacy-Busting Back Door
RalphTheWonderLlama writes "In recent months, online stock brokers have apparently been upset by the sale of their email addresses to spammers. Today TD Ameritrade released details of their investigation into the matter (along with a video message from the CEO and special FAQ). It seems some 'unauthorized code' had exposed client email addresses and possibly other sensitive information from an internal database. 'TD Ameritrade tracked down the break-in while doing an internal investigation into stock-related spam. The company called in forensic investigators and they discovered "unauthorized code" in their system that provided access for the hacker or hackers. According to the advisory, the code has been eliminated from the system. Moglia, speaking in an online video-taped message to customers, said he is "confidant" that they have figured out how the information was taken.'"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

2177. How Mainstream Can Code Scavenging Go?
The time-honored tradition of code scavanging has long been a way for new programmers to "break in" to a new language or task that they may not want to build from the ground up. The re-use of old code, cleaned up and tweaked to a new purpose can help developers learn many useful skills and accomplish tasks quickly, especially for small tasks that aren't of vital importance. One blogger wondered if this process could be formalized and tools could be built to help foster and enable code scavanging on a mass level. Is this a viable option, or are there just too many things to consider?Read more of this story at Slashdot.

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_Dev_Team_releases_code_for_the_AnySim_unlock_tool'; The iPhone Dev Team has been calling their AnySim iPhone unlock tool "open source" from the start, but they've finally made good on their promise and posted the code on Google Code. Have at it, hackers -- not being able to unlock new 1.1.2 iPhones is surely putting a damper on someone's holiday season. 2833. Panasonic to Release Two new Blu-Ray Players
Masayuki Kozuka, the general manager of Matsushita’s storage device strategy reveals company plan to release two new High-End Blu-ray players In January. No further information on spec or pricing but Masayuki also announced bundle package with current line of Plasma TV and Blu-ray player coming to your local electronic retailers such as Circuit City and Best Buy. [updated: We just found out Best Buy is selling the bundle online with $500 off Panasonic plasma TV and DMP-BD30K Blu-Ray player, what a sweet deal!]
The most current line of Panasonic’s Blu-Ray player is DMP-BD30 and by far the best standalone Blu-Ray player has to offer. It’s 1.1 profile certified but only does HBR (High Bitrate Bitstreaming) for HD audio, that included the holy grail DTS-MA. There is no internal decoder capability for DD+, True HD or DTS-MA. To get the best out of BD30, one has to get an external processor or a receiver that’s capable to decode HBR. My speculation of the coming ‘High-End’ players is nothing but featuring Internal decoding for Hd-audio and DTS-MA with 7.1analog outputs. What they can do better is adding SACD (via DSD) and DVD-A capability or perhaps no region code and profile 2.0. We’ll see if that’s the case in CES 2008.

I know people are crazy about their Bluetooth headsets but let me tell you something, you look goofy. That’s just my opinion, now, but it had to be said. Luckily, though, there are solutions.
Jabra has just released one such solution in the form of a Bluetooth Stereo Headset Dog Tag. You can’t go wrong with a dog tag. They are hip, stylish and somewhat patriotic even. This one comes with 200 hours of standby time and is USB rechargeable.
You can buy one for $72. Take it from me, unless you are working the geek style, this is a more suitable way to go.

3041. The Binary Code Tie shows your hatred for ties
I have never met a person that got excited over wearing a tie. No one actually enjoys wearing one, but occasionally it becomes absolutely necessary. This binary code tie is just the way to rebel while still following the rules.
The tie decoded simply says ‘Ties Suck’ a statement that most people would indeed agree with. Even women have come to recognize ties are the male version of pointy toed high heals. Besides, we geeks cannot conform to the normal standards, we have to stand out somehow.
Likely no one will have any idea what the tie says, but at least you can feel exhilarated by secretly showing your distaste. To snag one of your own it will cost you $24.99.

3042. The 8-Bit Guitar Strap
I have been looking for months for a guitar strap to go with my collection of Guitar Hero and Rock Band guitars. Unfortunately I always look for something completely off the wall and with a bit of geeky influence, which means it’s doubtful I’ll find one at the local music store. However, my search is finally over, this 8-Bit Guitar Strap is just the thing.
The guitar straps that come with the games are just way too boring. You have to have something that lets people know you’re a serious gamer, by whipping out your own personalized guitar.
The guitar straps come in two styles black sprites and blue sprites, blue of course being the best. The guitar strap will sadly set you back $32.95, which is about double what I originally wanted to pay.

3043. The Rebel Necklace from the beloved Etsy
Etsy once again has dished out another geeky little gem, this Rebel Necklace. Anyone who knows enough about Star Wars to recognize the symbol is likely to be drawn to it.
The symbol is abstract and cool enough to blend in with even a non-geek environment. A lot of people still don’t recognize the symbol widely enough that they’ll likely just think it’s a quirky little bauble.
Sadly this particular necklace has already been sold, however, after reading through the info on the seller I noticed she states that if requested she may be able to recreate a certain piece of jewelry. This original one was sold for $12.

3044. The Eclipse Laptop Sleeve from Brenthaven
These Eclipse laptop sleeves are great for those who enjoy a more sporty look. After all, some may want a laptop bag that can actually take a bit of a beating. These Eclipse bags look rugged enough to take out on an afternoon hike, not that I’d carry my MacBook around in the woods of course.
The sleeves are specifically for the the MacBook fitting the 13.3”, the 15.4” and the 17”. The great thing is they not only feature a cute pink version but green and black as well. It features a layer of foam padding, a faux-suede interior and a slip pocket for any documents and papers you might need.
It also has an ergonomic retractable handle. The prices vary slightly depending on the size you want. The 13.3” and the 15.4” are both priced at $39.95. The 17” is being sold for slightly more at $44.95.
