1640. FCC approves rules for 2009 digital TV transition

While we passed the T-minus two year mark earlier this year, the FCC has just now approved rules "that it says will ensure that millions of cable subscribers will still be able to watch broadcast programming after the digital television transition in 2009." Judging by reports, not a whole lot of new material was covered, but the new FCC rules reportedly mandate that cable operators "either convert the digital signal to analog at the point where the cable signal originates or supply customers with a down converter device that will change digital signals to analog at the TV set." Interestingly, the FCC "did not require operators to pass through every bit of information, as broadcasters had pushed for," and while smaller cable systems will be able to request a waiver, all providers will be required to "guarantee that analog cable customers will receive broadcast channels until February 2012."

1662. Twentyfour:London bar and nightclub is the most technologically-advanced yet

24bar.jpg The launch of a new bar in London has got the whole of Shiny Towers in a tizz, not just because it's literally down the road from our offices and we're renowned cocktail-supping gals, but because it promises to be not just London's most technologically-advanced bar, but possibly the world's too. It's reportedly the first bar in the world with a fully-interactive interior, where customers can control projected images on every wall, choosing between 'dot matrix sci-fi chic, crashing sea surroundings, Californian desert scenery', or even your own images and videos. If you fancy getting even more involved with the interior decoration, you can play with the interactive virtual Koi Carp, or dance and watch your thermal shadows on the walls replicating every shape being thrown...

samsung-armani.jpg Boo hiss. So much for our wild speculation months ago that the rumoured Samsung Armani mobile would be the F700, or 'Croix', as it's recently been branded. Concrete information, such as photos and a long string of model numbers no-one could every possibly remember have been leaked online, and we can reveal it's simply a disappointing high-end version of their SGH-P520, a touch-screen mobile that hit tech blog headlines earlier this year...

thefickler writes "MTV Networks, the biggest division of Viacom Inc. has announced plans to make every South Park episode available online for free as part of a plan to make the show available to a larger audience." 2326. Two men evicted over 'Rock Band' playing sessions

It's the new most annoying thing - neighbours who are really into Guitar Hero and its various clones and spin-offs, and keep organising parties where you have the pleasure of hearing the same song, played over and over again, all night, with the odd jarring "BINK" every time someone misses a note. If you have a Guitar Hero-playing neighbour, here's some happy revenge news - two American men have been evicted from their flat for playing too much of the play-along music game Rock Band at night. Sweet, sweet justice. Here's hoping they fall into drug addiction and prostitution as payback for making their poor neighbours suffer. rock-band-eviction-notice.jpg

2370. How would you change Rock Band?

There's only a select few titles that are really worth obsessing over for nearly half a year, but apparently, Rock Band is indeed a member of that upper echelon. After months of drooling over images of the game's accompanying hardware assortment, the star-studded title has finally landed on store shelves, and according to Electronic Arts, copies haven't been hanging around for long. In a report posted yesterday, EA noted that it moved "hundreds of thousands" of boxes over the Thanksgiving weekend, and judging by most every review we've seen, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. 'Course, with so much critical hardware packed in, it's not terribly surprising to hear that some early adopters found a few flaws, but it seems that EA has fessed up to the issues and is offering VIP treatment (read: immediate replacements) to those with jacked up axes.

Now that you've had some time to work out those vocal cords, brush up on your drum rolls and mosh in your own living room, inquiring minds are dying to know how you would have done things differently. We've already given you a shot to vouch for your rhythm game of choice, but haters and posse members alike can feel free to step up to the proverbial microphone and voice your wishes. Would you have thrown in a Telecaster rather than a Strat? How about embedding an accelerometer in the microphone in order to accumulate kudos for mindless twirling? Totally bummed by the omission of a wildly flamboyant mic stand a la Steven Tyler? Whatever your beef, don't hold back on this one -- your All Access pass to remixing Rock Band has (un)officially been granted. Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

2371. NEC shows off fluorescent light-powered wireless camera

Filed under: It looks like those looking to put together a quick and easy surveillance system for spying on their employees could soon find their solution courtesy of NEC, which is set to debut a new security cam that draws all its power from a standard fluorescent light. But that's not all, the camera also boasts some built-in 802.11b WiFi capabilities to stream all that video (or, more specifically, an image every ten seconds) back to a PC, which can presumably be used to monitor dozens of these little all-seeing wonders. No word on a price or release date, but NEC will apparently have more to say about it at the iExpo2007 conference that gets underway in Tokyo on December 5th.

2373. NVIDIA launching GeForce 9 series next February?

Filed under: Details are unsurprisingly light on this one, but DigiTimes has it that NVIDIA is gearing up to launch its next-generation GPU just after the Lunar New Year in February 2008. Reportedly, "sources at graphics card makers" have revealed that the GeForce 9 series will include the D9E -- a "high-end product that adopts 65-nanometer manufacturing," supports DirectX 10.1 and Shader Model 4.1 -- and the mid-range D9P, which will supposedly adopt 55-nanometer processing. Apparently, the former will be the first product in the new family, while the latter won't see light until June, but of course, we'd take every ounce of this with a healthy serving of salt for the time being. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

2385. French Taser chief hints at flying shockbot

Filed under:
According to a recent report, the French head of stun-gun maker Taser has plans to create a "mini-flying saucer like drone which could also fire Taser stun rounds on criminal suspects or rioting crowds." Antoine di Zazzo, fervent proselytizer of the electroshock weapon, is cutting through the is / isn't torture noise of recent UN reports with the news that the non-lethal device is about to make a serious splash in France, with president Nicolas Sarkozy promising to hand one to every policeman and gendarme. Of course, once di Zazzo's army of tiny, hovering stun machines take to the air -- sometime next year -- the police probably won't have to worry about brandishing their weapons.

2495. Mac Life imagines future Apple products - the iCar, iEye, iProtection and Squidget

apple-icar.jpg Admit it - you've had several discussions already about where Apple will go next, or what product they should reinvent. Personally, my favourite Apple concept I've thought up is the iToaster, with every slice of toast being laser-burnt with the shape of an apple. Mac Life has taken the typical geek pub conversation, ran it through Photoshop, uploaded the results online, and needless to say, Apple fans are in for a treat when they see the thought and attention to detail put into these concepts. The Squidget MP3 player, aimed at tweens, would include several iPhone apps, and possibly be designed by fashion houses with removable faces. Aiming a little higher, the iEye digital camera not only records photos...

2623. Apple Store 14th Street press preview

We got a chance to preview the new Manhattan Apple Store this morning before the official unveiling tomorrow at 6PM. The store is nicely situated on W. 14th St. and 9th Ave., and while Apple did its best to blend into the existing early 20th century architecture, it's still a hard one to miss. The store itself is lacking the glass elevator of its 5th Ave. counterpart, but makes up for it with an epic three story glass staircase. It's the second-largest Apple Store in the US, with a full floor dedicated to service -- the genius bar can handle about 30 customers per hour. There are 175 employees total, and the store will be open until midnight every day of the week. We asked Ron Johnson, Apple's Senior VP of Retail, about how the growth of Apple into kiosks at other retail establishments such as Best Buy is impacting Apple Retail, and he responded that there's "plenty of room" for both, since Apple just had its best quarter ever in Mac sales and at Apple Stores simultaneously. He did say the ratio of new stores is going to move a bit more in the international direction, since there's a lot of room to grow there. We also asked about Genius Bar wait times, and he assured us that it's something Apple monitors constantly and continues to add staff to address.

2754. The Emoticon Transforming Stamp

About a month ago my sister-in-law enthusiastically tried to con me into going to a party where they sit around and put teddy bear stamps on everything. I of course turned her down flat, then again if I’d have had this stamp I might have considered it. emoticon think geek stamp Alright, so it would be a cold day in hell before I’d do the girly scrapbooking routine but I’d at least give it a second thought. Even if I didn’t go to a party where you can stamp to your hearts desire, I would definitely cover my Christmas cards with these bad boys this year. With every smiley face stamp you can bend the rubber to make it frown or just look way too excited. Each stamp is being sold at ThinkGeek for $5.99.

2797. Jonathan Ive being groomed to take over for Jobs one fateful day?

Filed under:
You've probably heard of Jonathan Ive: darling of the technology and industrial design worlds, and El Jobso's handsome, mountain of a right hand man in product design since the CEO's second coming at Apple. You might also know him as the dude that birthed the iMac, titanium Power Book and MacBook (Pro), iPod, iPhone, and just about every decent-looking Apple product in the last decade. Well, he's also apparently the guy the most people seem to be pontificating -- whether officially or not -- as Jobs's successor, according to the Times. Of course, there's another obvious, prominent theory about why the ever tight-lipped Apple hasn't done as most publicly traded companies and made a formal contingency plan for succession of the CEO gig: Jobs is immortal. I was instantly hooked when I saw this retro tote, featuring an old record player design on the front. Then when I found out it had speakers for my iPod, I had to resist buying myself an early Christmas present. retro iPod tote I have this issue every year, and then in the end I buy half the things I wanted for my 14 year old sister (we have extremely similar tastes). In case you’re like me and can’t stand to not have a strap you can sling over your shoulder, the bag has a longer strap that can be tucked away inside when it’s not in use. The amplified stereo speakers run off of four AA batteries, which are as usual not included. It measures 12”x14.5”x3.5” and is being sold for $60. iPod Tote [via likecool] Relevant Entries on SlashGear

2853. Snag Vista Ultimate for free, in exchange for your privacy

Filed under: , Microsoft's been keeping its record pretty clean of late, but we suppose it couldn't end the year without a parting shot meant to cheese off the ultra-private, Microsoft-eats-children types. The company's latest diabolical plan involves giving away free copies of Windows Vista Ultimate, Office Ultimate '07, Money Plus Premium, Encarta Premium or Streets and Trips -- scary, we know. All you need to do is fill out a few surveys now and then, and download a little app that lets Microsoft watch your every move for three months. 2871. Researchers create printed solar cells

Filed under: We've seen a lot of attempts to cut the costs of solar cells, but a team in Japan has managed to create an inexpensive flexible cell that's as thin as a sheet of paper using what they describe as traditional printing techniques. The team, composed of researchers from Toin University in Yokohama and private firm Fujimori Kogyo, managed to eliminate the expensive silicon component of regular solar cells, reducing thickness to just .4mm (.015 inches), and allowing a factory to pump out reams of the material every month -- enough to generate 10 megawatts of juice. That's actually a fairly low estimate, as the cells are only at 6% efficiency right now, but we can imagine that number shooting upwards after they start shipping in February. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

2874. Sim2 announces $12,000 Domino 80E projector

Filed under: , It's certainly not for everyone, but those willing to tread into five-digit territory for the benefit of their home theater may want to consider Sim2's just-announced Domino 80E projector which, at $12,000 is actually a bit of a bargain compared to some of the company's other projectors. For that price, you'll of course get a full 1080p projector, along with DarkChip3 DLP technology, a 4,500:1 contrast ratio, and just about every port you could want. As if that wasn't enough, you can also add an optional 2.35:1 anamorphic lens adapter, which apparently doesn't require an external processor to change the aspect ratio and, no doubt just as importantly for some, you can get it in your choice of white or matte black finishes.

50cent-file-sharing.jpgHeart of gold, that man. 50 Cent kind of isn't that bothered about file-sharing, as he realises the music industry needs to change - and that artists can make money in other ways than flogging them an album every year. 2972. TomTom LINK 300 hits the FCC

Filed under: While it likely won't be of much interest to folks that buy their GPS units one at a time, those responsible for keeping tabs on whole fleets of vehicles will no doubt be pleased to hear that TomTom has an updated version of its LINK device on the way, as evidenced by its recent appearance at the FCC. As with the earlier version, the new LINK 300 model is designed to be paired with TomTom's WORK platform, which allows for two-way communication between a vehicle and the main office, and provides a means to keep track of working hours and breaks, among other work-related things. While there's no official word on a release just yet, we wouldn't expect it to be too long before a select few drivers out there have one of these keeping watch on their every move.

3073. Body-scanning chair to show UK prisoners who's BOSS

Filed under: , Not nearly as intrusive as it first sounds, the Body Orifice Security Scanner (BOSS) is a chair-shaped mobile metal detector that officials are considering installing in every prison in England and Wales. Designed mainly to weed out one of the most popular forms of contraband -- cellphones -- the new BOSS II is said to be sensitive enough to detect even a single SIM card being smuggled somewhere inside an individual. So far the two £6,500 ($12,900) chairs that have been used at the Woodhill jail in Milton Keynes since April have helped authorities seize 21 handsets, with inmates who trigger an alert segregated and swiped down by a metal detector every time they leave their cells until the metal object has been, um, passed. While this system does humanely do away with uncomfortable cavity searches, those poor souls with a knee replacement, a bit of shrapnel embedded in their hip, or the like seem destined to toil away in solitary confinement for eternity.

3095. MEMS-based smart fuses could guarantee desired explosions

Filed under: While we certainly hope the average (read: not GI) jane / joe isn't overly concerned about the rate at which homegrown explosions detonate as desired, we understand the Army's need to have more faith in their own munitions. Reportedly, a new "smart fuse" conjured up at Georgia Tech could soon prevent bombs from experiencing fuse failure by using "semiconductor fabrication equipment to make hundreds of ultra-high precision detonators on a wafer at the same time." In addition to cutting down on the use of toxic heavy metals and increasing the safety of weapon production, the intelligent MEMS fuse will supposedly "incorporate built-in arm and fail-safe mechanisms that virtually guarantee that munitions go off when they should, every time." Weapons that fire when needed -- now there's a concept.

zyxe_logo.jpgWhile WiFi is great for a lot of things, but there are instances where it isn't the best solution for home networking. Perhaps you live in a palatial mansion that outstrips the range of ordinary WiFi technology, or maybe you live in a drafty Scottish castle with five foot thick walls that completely blocks all your signals. Or maybe every other sod in the near vicinity already has a WiFi router clogging up the airwaves. Whatever. There's a way around it that works really well called HomePlug AV, which uses your mains sockets to carry your network. The trouble so far has been that you always have to buy a costly set of HomePlug AV adapters - one for each of the devices you want to plug in and one to plug into your router / hub.
