2349. Brick is back with the Mini MOB retro mobile
Filed under: Cellphones
Is the mobile phone really mature enough for brick phones to make a retro comeback? According to the makers of the ironically named Mini MOB, the answer to that is yes. The Mini MOB is definitely designed in the retro brick phone style, but at only 3.5 cm wide, it could probably be considered a scale model. It includes some pretty standard specs -- camera, MP3 player, 128 MB card for the SD slot -- but also happens to have an amazing battery life of 30 days standby, and a full 72 hours of continuous talk time! That's almost enough to get us interested in picking one up, but at £160 ($320+) it ain't an easy decision.

You might've noticed the recent uptick in mobile industry news, which comes courtesy of the annual Mobius conference currently taking place in Amsterdam. "What's the best 3G smartphone currently available in the States?"
And yes, we mean 3G. We're also talking about what's available in the here and now, but it could very well just be time to wait for the next great thing to come along, so be sure to let us know if that's the case for you. 2445. World of Warcraft Dell XPS notebooks urges you to scream “For The Horde!”
So Dell, not too long ago, sold a pair of WoW customized laptops for charity, well, now you can buy one for yourself without the charity price. The customizations aren’t all external with some cool decals slapped on a XPS M1730, they went all out.
Inside, they start buy going ahead and installing both versions of WoW, the original World of Warcraft and The Burning Crusade as well as all major client patches, and as time goes on, as long as they are still selling this laptop, they’ll continue to test and pre-install the latest patches. They also load up the system with customized WoW screensavers and backgrounds.
You can get the laptop in your choice of Horde or Alliance, which one you choose determines what the lid of your laptop looks like, as well as what backgrounds and screensavers your system comes pre-loaded with. With your system you also get a Quest Envelope, a WoW backpack full of stuff, and then your computer, obviously.
The Quest Envelope comes separate from the system via certified overnight mail and contains some interesting things including a Golden Ticket, the Blizzard Beta Club Card, and the Collector’s Edition Account Upgrade Certificate. The Golden Ticket nets you a real life figurine of your character with weapons and armor of your choice, this is done by FingerPrints, and they pull your characters data off the server to make your figurine. The Blizzard Beta Club Card gets you into the next 5 betas including the Wrath of the Lich King. The Collector’s Edition Account Upgrade is right now only good for a special pet in the game.
Now for the Backpack, it has the WoW BattleChest which has full, retail versions of WoW and the Burning Crusade as well as WarCraft III and the Frozen Throne expansion for it as well as the strategy guide for both. It also has the WoW soundtrack, a making of WoW behind the scenes DVD, the Heroes of Azeroth and Through the Dark Portal starter decks for the WoW trading card game, the BradyGames WoW strategy guide, the Burning Crusade Strategy guide, the Rise of the Horde book, and the Tides of Darkness book.
Now then for the notebook, you get an XPS M1730 customized for WoW, it has a 17” HD LCD, illuminated speaker grills and faction honor badges, a backlit keyboard, an integrated Logitech GamePanel LCD stats tracker, nVidia SLI with an AGEIA PhysX mobile card setup (that’s better than any pre-configured desktop I’ve ever seen), and the rest is the standard XPS M1730 notebook configuration. If you want it, it will cost you a cool $4500 with the base configuration, which if I do say so myself, is far from basic, me want. And finally, “FOR THE HORDE!!!”

2740. Slacker Mobile prototypes buggy, but cool
Walt Mossberg, the prophet of all other tech journalists, likes the Slacker Mobile, provided they fix all the bugs. For those not in the know, its basically internet radio on the go with the ability to customize and store the streams.
To me, it sounds like Pandora: The Music Genome Project, but on the go. It works off of WiFi and provides a cool interface, a 4” screen to view pictures, stream/album info, and stuff of that nature on. There seems to be plenty of controls on the device which should make it fairly easy to use.
Like I said, Uncle Walt (not Disney) had some issues with the device, issues that likely played a part in its release being delayed until the end of January 08. Here they are in a nice list format: sometimes the players didn’t wake up after going to sleep which required a reboot, the touch strip on the side of the screen was unreliable, one of the two players he received failed on multiple attempts to connect to his account, and finally, the battery life is well below the targeted 12 hours between recharge times. According to Mr. Mossberg, those issues are known by the company, and they intend to have them all fixed by the launch date.

2744. Hackers have broken into the two most important science labs in the US
The first is Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which I assume is somewhere near Oak Ridge Nuclear facility in Tennessee. The second was the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the famous site of the A-Bomb testing and development.
What did they steal from the Oak Ridge lab? A complete visitors database from 1990 to 2004 including SSN numbers and birth dates, with 3000 of the nations best researchers visiting the lab each year, lets just say they pretty much have a Who’s Who of the science community now.
Nothing has been said about what was taken from the Los Alamos lab, but there was an attack and it seems likely it was successful at least to some extent, word is there were probably also attacks on other labs in the US. Hopefully nothing more important than the guest list was taken, but due to greed, or leverage, the guest list with SSN numbers might be sufficient to get what they really want, it’s quite sad to think that simply signing in to help the US with some research might have some effect on your life days, or even years later.

2849. NASA Snaps Mysterious "Night-Shining" Clouds
coondoggie writes to tell us that NASA has captured some pretty impressive images of the Alluring noctilucent (or "night-shining") clouds. These clouds are made up of ice crystals and dust and are formed at high altitudes near the poles. "Very little is known about how these clouds form over the poles, why they are being seen more frequently and at lower latitudes than ever before, or why they have been growing brighter. AIM will observe two complete cloud seasons over both poles, documenting an entire life cycle of the shiny clouds for the first time. 'It is clear that these clouds are changing, a sign that a part of our atmosphere is changing and we do not understand how, why or what it means,' stated AIM principal investigator James Russell III of Hampton University, Hampton, Va. 'These observations suggest a connection with global change in the lower atmosphere and could represent an early warning that our Earth environment is being changed.'"Read more of this story at Slashdot.
2854. Dell XPS M1730 review roundup
If you're down with your "laptop" weighing some 10.6-pounds, and you don't mind shelling out copious quantities of cash in order to see those frame rates hold steady in the triple digits, the XPS M1730 has your name written all over it. At least, that's what we've gathered from reading the first batch of reviews to hit the 'net. Generally speaking, the adoration for this so-called Beast was universal, as just about everyone came away thoroughly impressed with its gaming performance, mesmerizing LEDs and cutting edge hardware found all over. Truth be told, the only real digs revolved around its unwieldy size, ho hum port selection, paltry battery life and the humongous power supply. 'Course, anyone remotely interested in this thing is probably willing to deal with the aforementioned negatives in order to posses such an incredibly powerful mobile gaming rig, and if you've been holding that trigger finger waiting for the critics to give you the all clear, feel free to fire at will.

2870. Dell Latitude XT tablet is official, sexy
Filed under: Laptops, Tablet PCs
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/hardware/Dell_Latitude_XT_tablet_is_official_sexy'; It's absolutely no secret that Dell's been working on a tablet PC -- we've been hearing about the damn thing since as far back as mid 2004 (no joke!) and the company did promise it in 2007, which it's almost not. What took them so long to get it out the door we've no idea, but it's hard to deny the appeal of this little ThinkPad-esque bugger. Here are those specs which you've absolutely never seen before:
-
12.1-inch WXGA (1280 x 800) in CCFL ("outdoor display," up to 400cd/m2) and LED backlight options
Capacitive touchscreen(!!) with palm detection (this, if anything, could enable that supposed multi-touch), and active digitizer.

2875. Hitachi intros CP-X417 wireless projector
Filed under: Displays
Those looking for a little wireless connectivity from their projector now have yet another option to consider from Hitachi, which has just introduced its new CP-X417 model. Apart from that desirable-but-increasingly-common feature, the projector will give you a standard XGA resolution, along with 3,000 ANSI lumens of brightness, a full range of inputs (minus HDMI, it seems), and a promised 3,000 hours of lamp life in "whisper mode," not to mention a built-in 7 watt speaker. At just $900, it also shouldn't throw your budget off too much and you should be able to get your hands on one right now.

2953. Can New Laptop Batteries Pay For Themselves?
As a frequent-flying, heavy user of laptops, I've always wondered whether it's better to replace laptop batteries when their battery life declines (they're not cheap, let me tell you) or just bite the bullet and buy a new laptop. Finally, I've constructed AN EXPERIMENT to figure that out.
2971. Kanguru intros pricey standalone USB Duplicator
Filed under: Storage
We aren't about to believe Kanguru's latest is really the "first of its kind," but it's not exactly something you see everyday while perusing the aisles at your local office supply store, either. The standalone USB Duplicator does an excellent job of describing its sole purpose in life with its title, but we'll humor you, anyway. This box comes in two flavors -- 1 master to 9 targets or 1 master to 24 targets -- which allows USB 1.1 / 2.0 thumb drives and / or USB hard drives to be hooked up and mirrored with extraordinarily little effort. Reportedly, the system is mostly automatic, and it will play nice with "all major file systems." Think you could put one of these to good use? Yeah, we're sure you could -- but how long will it take you to recoup the $2,999.99 (for the 10-port version, no less) you'll be laying down up front?

3052. 3-way SLI with nVidia cards now possible
To do this you need 5 things, the first, an nVidia nForce 850 SLI MCP motherboard, 3 8800 GTX or Ultra cards and a near endless budget to afford all of that. So, up until now, you had your choice of dual-card SLI or quad-SLI, the latter was really just a dual-card SLI setup, but with 2 double cards, now you have the choice of 3 cards.
When are they going to announce the hexa-SLI configuration with 3 double 8800 cards? Supposedly the 3-way SLI configuration offers 2.8 times the performance of a single card configuration.
Who ever thought a ménage à trois could be so expensive? Anyways, you can scope out the 3-way SLI compatible components over at SLIzone.com, have fun emptying your life savings just so you can play Crysis with all the settings maxed out.
