2387. Motorola CEO stepping down

And in his place COO Greg Brown will be stepping up. Zander is stepping down on his terms and chose to use the end of the first quarter where Motorola saw a profit as a good time to announce it. I knew Motorola wasn’t doing too good because they haven’t released a hot product in a long time, but I had no idea it was this bad. It seems like the CEO’s of the entire mobile industry are stepping down, except in the companies that made money like ATT, Samsung, and HTC. The soon-to-be CEO of Motorola, Mr. Brown, plans to use the small profits they saw this most current quarter to bring Motorola out of its slumber. But analysts are saying that Mr. Brown has a long way to go before Motorola can expect to see consistent profits again, good luck Mr. Brown, that’s all I have to say. 2050. UK Government Warns of Chinese Espionage

Information has leaked that UK's Security Service, also called MI5, sent more than 1,000 letters yesterday to the CEOs of UK businesses informing them that "it has noticed an upsurge in ELECTRONIC ESPIONAGE attempts made or launched against a lot of UK companies." Martin Jordan, principal advisor of IT advisory services at KPMG, told a reporter that Chinese spies are "targeting financial information relating to deals which may occur and involve Chinese companies.... [the spies] are trying to find out the financial limits of such deals to subsequently push UK companies to pay out the maximum or receive the minimum amount of money within such deals."

2437. Everything But The Box Venus and Sputnik 12S speakers

Everything But The Box is and interesting name for a company, but I like it, kind of like I like the look of their latest speakers. The speakers themselves look like eyeballs, and they dangle from the ceiling kind of like some high end track lighting, but like I said, I like it. Ceiling-mounting speakers has always been a fairly tricky adventure, which is generally narrowed down to cutting a hole in your ceiling a buying a pair of high end in-ceiling speakers, sure, that’s nice, but if I spend any kind of money on any audio components, they are generally small works of art and I want them shown off not hidden away. Well, the Venus and Sputnik 12S speakers from EBTB offer up a ceiling-mount option, as well as some good audio. The Venus speakers have both a woofer and a tweeter, likely offering up mids and highs for an addition to your system. But if you really want to hear the bass, its going to have to the Sputnik 12S you add as it looks, and works the same, but its just a subwoofer. The wiring is all built in (likely coming through the suspension cables) and the speakers probably mount similar to a surface mount light fixture, easy enough just about anyone could do it. 2583. What If Yoda Ran IBM?

Esther Schindler writes to mention that one IT leader who came from big business found himself in quite another world when he transitioned into a smaller business, specifically with respect to the amount of attention from their vendors. He presents an amusing approach with a familiar twist. "Not only are the IBMs of the world leaving money on the table, they're also risking future sales. The IT leaders at small organizations will in many cases be employed by larger organizations someday. Why alienate them? Vendors could engage IT leaders in small organizations now and build brand loyalty. How could they make such a business model work? Let's imagine (with apologies to George Lucas) what Yoda might do if he were running a large consultancy."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

2820. PSP Phone concept, I think I like this one the best

So gamers realize that when cellphone manufacturers try and combine gaming and cell-phones they usually screw it up, so in an effort to push Sony-Ericsson in the right direction, some guy came up with this design for the PSP phone. It maintains the full functionality of the PSP but adds the phone functionality in. It looks like it’s a dual slider that slides up for the phone keypad or at an angle for the PSP controls. Sure, you might lose the UMD slot with this design, but it’s on its way out already, so by the time this phone would be released, you should be good to go. The best part is that instead of trying to build a gaming platform onto some mediocre mobile devices, you’d be taking an already fairly well-developed gaming platform and try and build a phone into it, I have a feeling that it would work a lot better this way. Also, this guy apparently things that a PSP phone would be deservant of a 3.2MP cam on the back and hopefully 3rd or 4th generation WWAN access on top of the WiFi the PSP already has. Sadly, this is just a concept, and not even one from Sony or Sony-Ericsson, but it’s a great one, so it probably won’t get used. Sony Ericsson PSP phone should be the dual-sliding device! 2823. iPod Touch Stand made from money

This is a YouTube video of some guy (Enrique Pardo) showing you how to use money to make your very own iPod Touch stand. Supposedly it works with the iPhone too, even more supposedly, you don’t have to use a $100 bill to make it, but lets keep it classy and stick to the original design plans. screenshots-17.jpg It’s pretty ingenious if you ask me. I am all about saving money by making my own stuff, but last I checked, the iPod Touch already comes with a stand, a considerably smaller one too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU36zTVkOTY However if you are in a gift exchange with a $500 minimum limit you could by an iPod Touch 16GB and fold together one of these stands out of a $100 bill and throw it in there just for fun. But since you are probably not, its still a cool trick to add to your repertoire of Origami tricks. $100 Bill iPhone+iPod Touch Stand [via swissmiss] Relevant Entries on SlashGear

2835. The retro iPod Tote

I was instantly hooked when I saw this retro tote, featuring an old record player design on the front. Then when I found out it had speakers for my iPod, I had to resist buying myself an early Christmas present. retro iPod tote I have this issue every year, and then in the end I buy half the things I wanted for my 14 year old sister (we have extremely similar tastes). In case you’re like me and can’t stand to not have a strap you can sling over your shoulder, the bag has a longer strap that can be tucked away inside when it’s not in use. The amplified stereo speakers run off of four AA batteries, which are as usual not included. It measures 12”x14.5”x3.5” and is being sold for $60. iPod Tote [via likecool] Relevant Entries on SlashGear

2853. Snag Vista Ultimate for free, in exchange for your privacy

Filed under: , Microsoft's been keeping its record pretty clean of late, but we suppose it couldn't end the year without a parting shot meant to cheese off the ultra-private, Microsoft-eats-children types. The company's latest diabolical plan involves giving away free copies of Windows Vista Ultimate, Office Ultimate '07, Money Plus Premium, Encarta Premium or Streets and Trips -- scary, we know. All you need to do is fill out a few surveys now and then, and download a little app that lets Microsoft watch your every move for three months. If you can manage to be a good little pod person for that long, you get a free copy of whatever software title you selected in the mail. But really, can you put a price on dignity? Exactly, you can't, so sign us up!

2915. 50 Cent is surprisingly OK with the file-sharing thing

50cent-file-sharing.jpgHeart of gold, that man. 50 Cent kind of isn't that bothered about file-sharing, as he realises the music industry needs to change - and that artists can make money in other ways than flogging them an album every year. He said in his slightly odd drawl - "The concerts are crowded and the industry must understand that they have to manage all the 360 degrees around an artist. They have to maximize their income...
