2352. Ricavision kicks out VAVE100 universal MCE / SideShow remote
Filed under: HDTV, Home Entertainment
Following up on the RICA 100 that Ricavision unveiled in May is the VAVE100, which doesn't deviate too far from its past siblings in the design department, but does offer up a 2.4-inch QVGA LCD, a shiny green MCE button and SideShow functionality. As we'd expect, this thing is a Class 1 (~50 meters promised) Bluetooth device with A2DP support, and it comes with its own docking station, a BT transceiver and a power charger. The remote enables users to control over 20 different components from up to 50-feet away via IR, and the buttons are backlit to keep you from fumbling around in the dark while trying to switch tracks. Unfortunately, you won't be using one of these to control your new gear (you are asking for new gear this year, right?) until next February, but you will save $25 by pre-ordering now for $274.

2362. DIY Polonium detector makes barhopping safer
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets
Considering that Polonium has been the poison of choice in a number of high-profile cases, tinkerers who tend to spend some serious time enjoying themselves at the local pub may want to invest some time building one of these. The homegrown Polonium Pen doesn't require a whole lot of hardware -- just two darlington transistors, a LED, homemade ion chamber, one or two resistors, a battery and a power switch -- and it allows the owner to hold it over their drink and watch for it to light up. Should the LED turn on, simply pass on the beverage, exit as soon as humanly possible and figure out why in the world someone in the mob wants you to vanish. Hit the read link for the full-blown how-to guide.

2435. Elecom ASP-S750 portable speakers
How can you call a speaker set portable if it requires a power outlest? Regardless, these speakers are small, compact if you will, and crank out a total of 5 watts of sound from the pair.
The right speaker has a power switch and LED for power indication. It also has a volume knob, and is likely the speaker that the AC adapter plugs into.
These speakers would be good for your MP3 Player or laptop provided you had access to a power outlet. They’ll be available in December in Japan for about $45.

2636. Microsoft to test out Windows XP on OLPC XO
Filed under: Laptops
Don't fret, that feeling you've just been overcome with is nothing more than a harmless dose of déjà vu. Nearly a year ago to the day, we were hearing these same types of talks, and while the whole "XP on XO" conversation has been one of on-again / off-again nature, the switch has apparently been flipped to "go" once more. According to The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft is slated to test out Windows XP on OLPC XO laptops starting next month in the US, India and possibly Romania. James Utzschneider, general manager of Microsoft's Unlimited Potential Group, noted that it "wanted Windows to run on the XO and [that it was] investing significant energy and talent" to make sure it happened. Granted, Microsoft will have to be mighty pleased with the results before any of this goes commercial, as Mr. Utzschneider concluded by stating that the company "wants to [ensure] a quality experience before [making a] commitment to governments."

2834. The Simplistically Chic Felt Laptop Sleeve
If you like simplicity with your gadgets this cute sleeve is just the thing to keep your laptop protected from the elements. Just using wool felt and a wide elastic loop, it is probably the most simple sleeve to make.
Honestly, I expected this to come from Etsy and was equally surprised when I saw the price. I would think with supplies anyone could pick up from the local craft store it would at the very least be below fifty bucks.
However, each bag is being sold for $65-$75 just depending on the size. It is available to fit 13”, 15” or 17” and comes in light green, hot pink, orange and olive. It still isn’t a bad price and it would be great for any woman who needs her laptop for school and work since it could easily switch between your bookbag and briefcase.

2869. Dell Latitude XT tablet hands-on
Filed under: Features, Laptops, Tablet PCs
We spent a few minutes with the brand new Dell Latitude XT and we have to say, as far as tablets (and especially Dells) go, this thing is top-tier. Some thoughts:
-
The whole machine's decked in a ThinkPad-esque soft touch finish, and has the same rugged feeling, with magnesium and a seemingly higher quality build than you're normally likely to find in most other Dells.
The capacitive touchscreen worked really well, was nearly flush with the bezel, and, not surprisingly, instantly made us never want to go back to resistive touchscreen tablets.
The hinge is unidirectional and feels really sturdy.
It only has one speaker, so don't expect stereo audio out of the thing. The wireless on/off switch is much appreciated though, as is the SD slot.
The extended battery "slice" / platform add-on doubles your running time, although we're not entirely sure how it hurts heat since it covers the fan intake.
A base price $2500 is too much. We're sorry, we know this machine is pretty rad, but it's true. For a grand less you can snag an X61 with more power, and, we'd wager, more of that ThinkPad ruggedness. Ordinary consumers -- even many businesses -- will not pay that kind of a premium for this machine.
2968. ATI demonstrates hybrid-chip CrossFire graphics tech
Filed under: Desktops, Laptops
We've already seen laptops like Sony's Vaio SZ include integrated graphics alongside much more powerful (and power-hungry) dedicated chips, but AMD's looking to make such setups all the more commonplace with new chips capable of hybrid CrossFire. AMD recently demoed the tech to PC Perspective, showing off a 2.2GHz Phenom machine with both unreleased RS780 integrated graphics and a RV620-based card labeled HD Radeon 3450. Running games like Call of Duty 4 and Unreal Tournament 3, frame rates jumped from 30-35fps to around 55fps when hybrid mode was enabled. That's pretty respectable, although the system is limited to speedups of the slowest chip times two, so bigger gains are probably not in the offing. However, there can still be benefits to using chips of drastically different horsepower: the integrated chips can power down the heavy hitter to save power when not needed, and totally switch over when required. That's a pretty solid compromise, we think -- and with AMD aiming for the initial batch of hybrid CrossFire-capable cards to be priced around $50, it looks like we'll be seeing these setups a lot when AMD starts shipping these early next year. 3048. Warner Bros to Stand Neutral on Format War
The format war was heating up again with Pali Research analyst Rich Greenfield prediction of Warner’s exclusive endorsement on Blu-Ray coming few days ago and the switch means an end to HD-DVD. The Red Camp can relax and rest assures that it’s not happening anytime soon as Warner has denied its plan to stand on Blu-Ray exclusively.
Don Lindich got an official response from Warner Bros’s Senior Vice President and General Manager Jim Noonan.
“We have made no decision to change our present policy which is to produce in both HD DVD and Blu-ray.”
Well, If the public still can’t decide which is best at this point, it probably never will until both get replaced by next generation of media. The studio is more than happy to sell both or endorse one with financial incentives.

3055. Intel has a WiFi, WiMAX, and DVB-H all-in-one chip
They were demoing, it’s apparently a software modem and can change between WiFi in the house, school, or business to WiMAX when you are on the go and offer up DVB-H TV all the time. That’s freaking amazing, word is its also a proof of concept for converging CDMA and GSM and other such dreamy combinations.
They are called Software radios, for what technical reason I do not know, but I assume it has something to do with their ability to switch seamlessly between available networks and prioritize which one is fastest or preferable or something like that. There were talks of a “Universal Radio” which would be freaking awesome for those that travel a lot.
Imagine a single iPhone-like device running Android, with tethering available, and the ability to catch all the DVB signals, all the GSM and CDMA signals, and a plethora of 2G, 3G, and 4G wireless signals on top of WiFi and Bluetooth, that would be the god phone. Well, for now lets marvel at the WiFi/WiMAX/DVB-H chip that they do have ready for us.
