860. New technology has dramatic chip-cooling potential for future computers

Purdue researchers have demonstrated a new technology using tiny "ionic wind engines" that might dramatically improve computer chip cooling by creating an "ionic wind" breeze that increases the airflow on the surface of the chip. Advanced cooling...

1632. Utility Will Use Batteries to Store Wind Power

1938. The Reality of the Nike+iPod Kit

If I ever were to get a Nike+iPod set, I would probably return it or sell it on Ebay, sure I would like to get more fit, but I am a big dude, so running is kind of out of the question unless I want to wind up in the hospital. I do however like [...]

2051. Whoops! Micro-Wind Turbines May Increase CO2

Installing electricity-generating home wind turbans -- also called "micro-wind turbines" -- is all the rage among yuppies who want the neighbors to know how eco-friendly they are. But now the UK's Building Research Establishment Trust says "turbines are likely to add to, not subtract from, a home's CARBON FOOTPRINT." The reason is that the turbines harm the environment in their construction and maintenance, a harm that can't be paid back in energy generation in urban areas.

2057. Cult Watch 2007: Who's Drinking the Kool-Aid?

As we wind down another year in technology, it's a good time to check in on the cults and see how they’re doing. For companies who inspire them, user cults are nice because they motivate customers to overlook strategic blunders, exaggerate product successes and -- most importantly -- walk the earth “virally” marketing products without pay.

Cult members themselves get an enhanced feeling of self-worth through group association. "I'm better than you! I have an iPhone!" Consumers can become one of the “chosen people” for $399, plus a two-year contract.

Let's have a look at the major tech cults -- Apple, Microsoft, Linux, Google, Amazon, Palm and BlackBerry -- and see how they're doing on the KOOL-AID SCALE.

2844. UK Wants Huge Expansion In Offshore Wind Power

OriginalArlen writes "The UK government has announced an ambitious plan to expand the existing offshore wind turbine farms, which are already extensive, to an estimated 7,000 units — two per mile of coastline — enough to generate 20% of the UK's power needs by 2020. The newly green-friendly Conservative opposition party is also backing the scheme. Wonder what they'll make of it in Oregon..."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

2975. Mercedes-Benz developing "Attention Assist" to aid drowsy drivers

Filed under: Mercedes-Benz has already developed a system to help folks that have trouble braking, and it now looks like it's doing the same for those that have a tendency to fall asleep at the wheel. That will apparently come in the form of the automaker's "Attention Assist" system, which is apparently in the final stages of development and expected to go into production in 2009, according to Gizmag. Among other things, the system can record the angle of the steering wheel, as well as speed, acceleration, and the use of indicators and pedals, not to mention external factors like a side wind or an uneven road surface. If it detects suspicious behavior, it sets off a warning light and some presumably hard to ignore sounds to tell the driver to pull over. As Gizmag points out, however, this is far from the first system that tries to keep drowsy drivers alert, although it does seem to be a good deal more advanced than a few of the solutions we've seen.
