1093. Update on the $100 laptop

draft_2609_big.gif.jpg Break open the piggy banks, girls and boys, production of the XO1, the $100 laptop, has been ramped-up, with hardware suppliers being given the go-ahead to produce components needed to build millions of the machines. For less than the cost of a pair of designer jeans, a needy child can become a participant in the global online community as part of the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) program. Once disparaged by such tech worthies as Intel chairman Greg Barret and Microsoft’s Bill Gates, the laptop now draws praise from the tech community for its innovative design. Whether the child lives in the deserts of Libya or the mountains of Peru, there is a powering option available for them, including solar, foot-pump, or pull-string power. To accommodate schoolchildren without a roof over their heads, the laptops also come with a sunlight-readable display. More

1672. Apple to bring iTunes Store to Apple TV?

apple-tv-update.jpg Mac site LoopRumors is claiming that Apple's next update to its Apple TV device will include direct integration with the iTunes Store, allowing them to buy songs and rent movies from their sofa, without needing to use a computer. It's a simple enough feature (presumably the downloaded files would still be stored on the user's computer), and logical.

1750. The Conference Call Is Dead. Here's a Better Way

Conference calls haven't changed much in the past couple of decades. They're still an unproductive and annoying waste of time. Fortunately A two-year-old startup called TalkShoe rolled out a new VoIP service yesterday called ShoePhone. Unlike other VoIP services, ShoePhone offers a long list of features that make it an ideal replacement for the old-and-busted corporate conference call. ShoePhone can handle up to 250 callers at once, plus thousands of additional people who can listen live without talking. The whole call is then posted online for all to refer to later. That a huge pile of other incredible features. ShoePhone displays the name of whoever is talking, and features a mute button, text-chat censoring and a nice feature call "request-to-talk queuing" a huge pile of other cool features. It's time to DUMP THE OLD CONFERENCE CALL into the ash heap of obsolete corporate communication media.

1862. Gates Successor Says Microsoft Laid Foundation for Google

thefickler writes "According to Bill Gates' successor Craig Mundie, there would have been no Google without Microsoft. 'I mean, the fact is: Google's existence and success required Microsoft to have been successful previously to create the platform that allowed them to go on and connect people to their search servers. Now, Microsoft's business is not to control the platform per se, but in fact to allow it to be exploited by the world's developers. The fact that we have it out there gives us a good business, but in some ways it doesn't give us an advantage over any of the other developers in terms of being able to utilize it.' This comment comes from a lengthy interview between Mundie and APC magazine, which talks with the newly installed strategy and R&D head. Other interesting topics discussed include the future of Microsoft and Windows, OOXML, and and the 'rise of Linux' on the desktop."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

1863. How the iPod Touch Works

starexplorer2001 writes "The iPod Touch isn't in stores yet, but HowStuffWorks has a nice summary of how the 'touch' part of the iPod Touch works. Very similar to how the iPhone works, without those pesky rebates! From the article: 'The iPod touch also has a few other features that iPod enthusiasts had hoped to see on standard iPod models. Some users hoped for a wirelessly enabled iPod so they could synch their music or share files with friends over a Bluetooth or WiFi connection. The iPod touch is the first iPod to have wireless capability, although it doesn't use it to synch with a computer or friends' iPods. Instead, you can use it to browse the Web, watch YouTube videos or download music from a WiFi-specific iTunes Music Store. With its widescreen display and WiFi capability, the iPod touch might sound like a big step up from older iPod models. But the iPod touch isn't for everyone.'"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

2057. Cult Watch 2007: Who's Drinking the Kool-Aid?

As we wind down another year in technology, it's a good time to check in on the cults and see how they’re doing. For companies who inspire them, user cults are nice because they motivate customers to overlook strategic blunders, exaggerate product successes and -- most importantly -- walk the earth “virally” marketing products without pay.

Cult members themselves get an enhanced feeling of self-worth through group association. "I'm better than you! I have an iPhone!" Consumers can become one of the “chosen people” for $399, plus a two-year contract.

Let's have a look at the major tech cults -- Apple, Microsoft, Linux, Google, Amazon, Palm and BlackBerry -- and see how they're doing on the KOOL-AID SCALE.

2402. Hitch Vault – The Mini Safe

Hitch VaultI take great precaution in making sure I’m never without something I need, or if I am without making sure I have a backup plan. For example, I have a spare set of keys my parents keep for me and when I know I’m having a short cash flow month, I stash a little in a secret place that I often forget about until I’m in desperate need of it. The Hitch Vault takes those same concepts and brings them a little closer and more accessible. You put into your truck/SUV standard hitch receiver and voila, mini safe. It’s perfect for storing an extra set of keys, cash, credit cards or what-have-you. There’s a combination lock on it and unless you’re prone to forgetting numbers it’s a perfect solution for making sure your essentials are safe and handy. If this device isn’t something you’re interested in, I bet you know someone who could really use one and it is the season for giving. You can purchase a Hitch Vault for $70 at Amazon. 2416. Microfluidic Chips Made With Shrinky Dinks

SoyChemist writes "When she started her job as a new professor at UC Merced, Michelle Khine was stuck without a clean room or semiconductor fabrication equipment, so she went MacGyver and started making Lab-on-a-Chip devices in her kitchen with Shrinky Dinks, a laser printer, and a toaster oven. She would print a negative image of the channels onto the polystyrene sheets and then shrink them with heat. The miniaturized pattern served as a perfect mold for forming rounded, narrow channels in PDMS — a clear, synthetic rubber."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

2445. World of Warcraft Dell XPS notebooks urges you to scream “For The Horde!”

So Dell, not too long ago, sold a pair of WoW customized laptops for charity, well, now you can buy one for yourself without the charity price. The customizations aren’t all external with some cool decals slapped on a XPS M1730, they went all out. Inside, they start buy going ahead and installing both versions of WoW, the original World of Warcraft and The Burning Crusade as well as all major client patches, and as time goes on, as long as they are still selling this laptop, they’ll continue to test and pre-install the latest patches. They also load up the system with customized WoW screensavers and backgrounds. You can get the laptop in your choice of Horde or Alliance, which one you choose determines what the lid of your laptop looks like, as well as what backgrounds and screensavers your system comes pre-loaded with. With your system you also get a Quest Envelope, a WoW backpack full of stuff, and then your computer, obviously. The Quest Envelope comes separate from the system via certified overnight mail and contains some interesting things including a Golden Ticket, the Blizzard Beta Club Card, and the Collector’s Edition Account Upgrade Certificate. The Golden Ticket nets you a real life figurine of your character with weapons and armor of your choice, this is done by FingerPrints, and they pull your characters data off the server to make your figurine. The Blizzard Beta Club Card gets you into the next 5 betas including the Wrath of the Lich King. The Collector’s Edition Account Upgrade is right now only good for a special pet in the game. Now for the Backpack, it has the WoW BattleChest which has full, retail versions of WoW and the Burning Crusade as well as WarCraft III and the Frozen Throne expansion for it as well as the strategy guide for both. It also has the WoW soundtrack, a making of WoW behind the scenes DVD, the Heroes of Azeroth and Through the Dark Portal starter decks for the WoW trading card game, the BradyGames WoW strategy guide, the Burning Crusade Strategy guide, the Rise of the Horde book, and the Tides of Darkness book. Now then for the notebook, you get an XPS M1730 customized for WoW, it has a 17” HD LCD, illuminated speaker grills and faction honor badges, a backlit keyboard, an integrated Logitech GamePanel LCD stats tracker, nVidia SLI with an AGEIA PhysX mobile card setup (that’s better than any pre-configured desktop I’ve ever seen), and the rest is the standard XPS M1730 notebook configuration. If you want it, it will cost you a cool $4500 with the base configuration, which if I do say so myself, is far from basic, me want. Depending on who you listen to Steve Jobs has supposedly been pitching the idea of selling "premium" DVDs that would include an extra fee for the privilege of transferring your legally-purchased DVD to a different device. "The courts have held that "space-shifting" your CDs to a portable music device is a fair use. So you can legally import your CD collection to your iPod, or any other device, without paying a penny. Filed under: Now that PSP owners in the US can finally access the Playstation store without a PS3, it looks like Sony's getting ready to take the next logical step and cut the computer out of the equation as well. Speaking to MTV's Multiplayer blog, Playstation Network operations chief Eric Lempel said PSP downloads were "Something we're thinking about. With the capability of the PSP it's something that should be possible...it's just a matter of priorities and some technology that we need to make it all work right and make sure the content is delivered securely, just to protect some of our [intellectual properties]." Lempel went on to say that Sony is also working on and iTunes-like syncing functionality for the PSP, and that Mac support will be forthcoming. All in all, it seems like interesting times are ahead for Sony's newly-revived little gamer.

2644. AT&T claims completely open network, too -- "the most open," even!

Filed under: Who'd have thought the end of 2007 would see US cellphone carrier heavyweights duking it out with PR one-upsmanship to be... open? Seriously, someone pinch us, it's as amazing as it is farcical. So the latest development in big network "openness" has USA Today running off in the opposite direction with AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega's comments that "You can use any handset on our network you want... We don't prohibit it, or even police it. ... We are the most open wireless company in the industry." We think the headline "AT&T flings cellphone network wide open" kind of says it all.

The reality of the situation? Nothing has changed between yesterday and today, and, as de la Vega told us a couple of weeks ago, AT&T customers can continue expect the status quo from the nation's largest carrier in terms of their level of openness and flexibility. Granted, it's one thing for Verizon to say they're going wide open (especially being ridiculously closed CDMA carrier they are), but it's quite another for AT&T to lay claims as though it's somehow more open than any other carrier in the world when that argument comes as an extension of its core network technology. Yes, you can take your AT&T SIM, put it in an unlocked device, and run it on their network without much hassle -- but that doesn't make AT&T any more "open" than the final-say testing facility Verizon intends to use in "openly" making approvals (and disapprovals) of devices and software.

2645. Barbie B2 touchscreen MP3 player in pink and bearskin

Filed under:
If you've ever wondered how Barbie will prey upon the insecurities of the future generation of robot-assimilated little girls -- this is it. Somewhere in that Planet of the Apes, dystopian fembot horde sits the touchscreen Barbie B2 MP3 player. Unfortunately, without any clues for scale, the device is either the size of a fingernail, or giant Barbies with even more preposterous breast-to-hips ratios are invading Korea as we speak. We'll guess something closer to the former (while secretly hoping for the latter).

Update: We found the site pushing the B2. Of course, the makeup case design comes with a mirror to remind your little princess that she'll never quite meet the corporate beauty standard. Picture after the break.

2668. Blast-Proof Fabric Resists Multiple Explosions

An anonymous reader tips a Gizmodo story on a fabric whose properties are counterintuitive, to say the least of it. "Zetix is a fabric so strong it will resist multiple car bomb blasts without breaking. It absorbs and disperses the energy from explosions... it can be used in body armor, window covering, military tents, and hurricane defenses... [and] it can be used as medical sutures that won't damage body tissue. All of this is thanks to a property that apparently defies the laws of physics: helical-auxetics, objects that actually get fatter the more you stretch them. The concept makes my head want to explode, but when you see it in action it actually makes sense."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

2673. House Bill Could Criminalize Free Wi-Fi Operators

Velcroman98 sends word of a bill that passed the US House of Representatives by a lopsided vote of 409 to 2. It would require everyone who runs an open Wi-Fi connection to report illegal images, including "obscene" cartoons and drawings, or be fined up to $300,000. The Securing Adolescents From Exploitation-Online (SAFE) Act was rushed through the House without any hearings or committee votes, and the version that passed on a voice vote reportedly differs substantially from the last publicly available version. CNET reports that sentiment in favor of such a bill is strong in the Senate as well.Read more of this story at Slashdot.

2708. Novint Falcon gets reviewed: undoubtedly cool, unlikely to sell

Ever since we first got wind of this thing, we had a sneaking suspicion it just wouldn't take off regardless of how clever it was. Sadly, reviewers over at Bit-Tech tended to agree, deeming the Novint Falcon the "coolest peripheral" it had ever touched, but completely unlikely to ever gain steam in the marketplace. During the review, it was reiterated time and time again just how phenomenal the device actually is; the internal motors were able to transmit textures to one's hand almost impeccably, and it certainly enhanced certain aspects of game play once it became second nature to use. Unfortunately, all that gushing was met with the stark reality that there's no real promise that developers will ever latch on to this thing, and without guaranteed support, it's hard to recommend handing over $239. Nevertheless, we're sure more than a few of you may be willing to take the chance, and either way, the in-depth look at this curious creation is worth a read just to see what you're (potentially) missing. Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

2713. Flash memory inventor promises to deliver 3D semiconductors

Filed under: , , Fujio Masuoka already proven himself once with a little invention known as flash memory, and it now looks like he's aiming to deliver a follow-up with some newfangled three-dimensional semiconductors, which he says will allow for processors that are ten times faster than current designs. While exact details on the technology are still on the light side, Masuoka (who's currently CTO of Unisantis Electronics) will apparently be working with Singapore's Institute of Microelectronics to develop the 3D chips, which he expects to be ready in two years. All that additional know-how won't come without a price however, as Digital World Tokyo reports that Masuoka will be paying royalties to the Singapore government as he licenses the chips out to various manufacturers.  Read | Permalink | Email this | CommentsOffice Depot Featured Gadget: Xbox 360 Platinum System Packs the power to bring games to life!

2848. Dutch ODF Plan Could Sideline Microsoft

Yeti7226 sends word of a discussion coming up Wednesday in the parliament of The Netherlands that could result in mandated use of Open Document Format at government agencies there. If the plan is enacted, public-sector organizations, as well as the government, would have to transition to using ODF by 2010. Microsoft Netherlands has lobbied hard against the provision. Backers say it doesn't exclude Microsoft, because ODF can be produced out of MS Office via the use of plugins. 2853. Snag Vista Ultimate for free, in exchange for your privacy

Filed under: , Microsoft's been keeping its record pretty clean of late, but we suppose it couldn't end the year without a parting shot meant to cheese off the ultra-private, Microsoft-eats-children types. The company's latest diabolical plan involves giving away free copies of Windows Vista Ultimate, Office Ultimate '07, Money Plus Premium, Encarta Premium or Streets and Trips -- scary, we know. 2870. Dell Latitude XT tablet is official, sexy

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/hardware/Dell_Latitude_XT_tablet_is_official_sexy'; It's absolutely no secret that Dell's been working on a tablet PC -- we've been hearing about the damn thing since as far back as mid 2004 (no joke!) and the company did promise it in 2007, which it's almost not. What took them so long to get it out the door we've no idea, but it's hard to deny the appeal of this little ThinkPad-esque bugger. Here are those specs which you've absolutely never seen before:

12.1-inch WXGA (1280 x 800) in CCFL ("outdoor display," up to 400cd/m2) and LED backlight options
Capacitive touchscreen(!!) with palm detection (this, if anything, could enable that supposed multi-touch), and active digitizer.
Intel Core 2 Solo or Duo ULV at 1.06 and 1.2GHz, respectively ATI Radeon X1250 UMA Graphics Up to 3GB memory, runs Vista Ultimate or Business 40GB or 80GB 4200 RPM drive, 120GB 5400 RPM drive, or 32GB or 64GB SSD HSDPA or EVDO rev A., 802.11a/b/g/n options, Bluetooth 2.0, and gigabit Ethernet connectivity ExpressCard54 and SD slots, 1394, VGA, (3) USB 2.0 Scroll wheel, biometric reader, TPM 1.2, super low profile power adapter Up to 5 hours battery life with standard 43WH pack, up to 9 hours with extended 45WH pack; Energy Star 4.0 compliant 3.57 pounds (presumably without battery), 1-inch thick Starts at $2500
Okay, we'll hand it to these guys, alongside the M1330 the Latitude XT is the sexiest machine Dell's ever produced -- and the addition of a capacitive touchscreen totally blew our minds. But $2500 for the most stripped down option? Dell just priced itself right out of the game, if you ask us. Hands-on coming right up.

2942. Magellan Maestro 3100 hacked to add file manager / media player

Filed under:
Although we've already seen Garmin's c510 / c530 get hacked up earlier this year, now it's time for Magellan's Maestro 3100 to head under the knife. The engineering David Goeken managed to personalize his unit with a custom splash screen, a beefed up POI file, a file manager for adding / sorting through applications and a full-fledged media player for good measure. Granted, there's a laundry list of known issues to go along with it, but hey, what fun is a hack without a little troubleshooting? Before hitting the read link and rolling up your sleeves, you may want to grab a meal and a few hours of rest -- you'll need the energy just reading through the how-to guide.

2989. Intel develops integrated WiFi / WiMAX / DVB-H chip

Filed under: Intel, clearly not wanting to be left in the dust by the slew of new wireless technologies that are starting to converge, nasty-like, inside our shiny new devices, has begun testing on a chip which can effortlessly swap between WiFi, WiMAX, and DVB-H. The idea is that the chip's radio would talk to your WiFi at home, hand over the data to WiMAX if you hit the road, and also allow you to pull down digital television while staying mobile -- without having to use an array of separate radios or silicon. This should open up a whole new vista of possibilities for time-wasting activities, so whenever manufacturers want to get this into our phones / laptops, just say the word. We're ready.

3054. EeeXubuntu its Xubuntu for your Eee PC

Well, if you were lucky enough to snag an Eee, or if you suspect you are getting one as some physical representation of another’s love for you, and you aren’t too happy with the Xandros Linux distro that comes with it, there is a solution. Some savvy Linux people were kind enough to customize the Xubuntu LiveCD so it will work with your Asus Eee PC. Now, the idea with a LiveCD is that you can pop it in and give the OS a whirl without actually installing it, you know, kind of a try it before you buy it type of deal. Then if you like it, you click the Install icon on the desktop and it will install it for you. I like Ubuntu because it’s so easy to use, Xubuntu is the same thing just with a much lighter window manager and more simplified desktop environment that makes it good for PC’s with low graphics and processing power, such as the Eee PC. Ewdi, our resident former Red Hat developer, thinks that Ubuntu is just this side of the devil because you don’t learn anything from using it, but what does he know right? Anyways, you can get the liveCD from eeeuser.com’s new eeeXubuntu wiki. eeXubuntu –Asus Eee PC-Optimized Xubuntu [via laptoping] Relevant Entries on SlashGear

3056. iSicles Brazilian popsicles or ice cream

Yeah, this time the name does mean just what you think; it’s a frozen treat with an iPod inside. No really, they are peppering in 10k iPod Shuffles and stuffing them into their frozen treats. No wonder why Cracker Jack isn’t selling, how do you compete with a third-world country’s ice cream shop being able to afford to give out 10,000 iPod Shuffles? Anyways, the company worked with Apple to find a way to hide the Shuffles in the popsicles without ruining the iPods, and they did it, and now you have a chance to get one if you live in Brazil and really like ice cream. And, as close as that place is to the equator, I’d assume everyone likes ice cream there. No word on how much the popsicles cost, but I just think its cool as hell that they managed to stuff them in with a Popsicle. And of course, they are only available in Brazil, so if you have some vacation time and really wanted an iPod Shuffle, Brazil might not be a bad option. iSicles: Brazilian Company Hides iPod Shuffles in Popsicles [via Gearlog] Relevant Entries on SlashGear

3092. The Etymotic etyBlu: a less ridiculous looking successor to the ety8?

Filed under:
If you want a pair of true, in-ear buds without the muss and fuss of wires, your options are limited and you need to be prepared to make some sacrifices. One such sacrifice that needs to be heavily weighed into the equation, for example, is your desire to appear as though there is a pair of black Duplo blocks hanging out of your ears. That's exactly the curse of Etymotic's ety8, a decent set of stereo Bluetooth 'phones (we've tried them, they're comfortable and sound great) that were irreparably damaged by the ugly stick somewhere during the course of their development. The high-end headphone outfit has another Bluetooth product in the works, though -- the ER-89 "etyBlu" just hit the FCC's wires, giving us hope that they heard our complaints loud and clear and have worked to make their kit just a little less embarrassing to wear in public. We couldn't find conclusive evidence in the documentation that we're looking at a stereo headset here; theoretically, it could just be a mono product for calls, but we're encouraged by a brief mention of listening to music (who wants to blast tunes into one ear?) and the fact that the ety8's model number is ER-88. Can anyone make out what's going on in this FCC label diagram here? Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
